About your guest lecturers:

Richard Walls is a senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University, with a BSc.Eng (Civil), MSc (Structural) and PhD (Civil Engineering). His PhD Thesis – “A beam finite element for the analysis of structures in fire” was completed under the supervision of Dr Hennie de Clercq and Dr Celeste Viljoen. Richard is the lead researcher in Fire Engineering Research Unit at Stellenbosch University, especially in terms of structural fire design. Various fire related topics are currently being investigated, such as the design of steel structures in fire, analysis of structures in fire, forensic fire investigations, and informal settlement fire behaviour.

Ben Van Wyk is a civil/structural engineer by training with over 8 years’ experience in various facets of the construction industry. In 2019 he left consulting and joined StonCor Africa as Engineering Manager of the Carboline Business Unit, focusing amongst other things on structural engineering in relation to fireproofing coatings design. Ben is passionate about promoting technical expertise in the industry when it comes to all aspects of product development, design, specification and application of coatings and other systems for the protection of steel against corrosion and fire.
