The project involved the design a neighbourhood centre with a more rural/farm style aesthetic. Steel was a very important part of the aesthetic. The lightness of steel had to contrast with some of the more solid concrete elements. The steel elements had to enhance detail elements and features. Being an open mall with walkway canopies on either side require columns in the mall. Steel beam sections stretch the width of the mall to omit columns in the mall. These steel beams would also be a feature element with the combination of timber.

 

Give a brief description of the structural framing. What type of sections were used (e.g. hollow, cellular, I beams etc) and why?

For the walkway columns back to back U-channels spaced were used with purlins rectangular sections instead of the standard I-beam sections. Purlins protrude past the roof sheeting as a blinker detail. For the columns carrying the concrete beam similar columns were used as with the walkway columns. The beam crossing the mall where I-sections.

Were there any challenges in the fabrication of the project from the engineer’s design – if yes, please tell? Tell more about fabrication and erection process if it was complex, difficult, innovative etc.

Special elements is a waterwheel constructed of corten steel aswell as corten infill panels between feature concrete column recesses. Balancing of the waterwheel and its stability most challenging.

How did the project team work together (e.g. contractor involved early,challenges/ ease of communication etc.)

Contractor, subcontractor and all consultants were involved very early in the design development process.
