Project Overview

The client required a green field fit-for-purpose fruit packaging facility to accommodate both Avocado and Kiwi fruit in one facility, but different handling and refrigeration protocols. The location is adjacent to their operational sugar mill on a steep sloping site which needs to link to the existing internal road network for delivery and dispatc

Project Details
The structural framing was originally concrete columns with steel trusses but timing required the use of material that could be manufactured in large amounts in a faster time. Steel was chosen but necessitated a redesign whilst raft foundations were busy being implemented, The use of concrete stubs was a clever way to de-link the raft construction
Benefits of Steel in this Application

The cost per area ratio for this building type makes steel the only available material to feasibly achieve the functional requirements thereof. The long span to weight / cost ratio allows for flexibility in design and spatial requirements to accommodate the small tolerances which the equipment requires.
