Project Overview

To design a new iconic shading roof structure for this focal point of the school.We used flat bars as the main hangers, with C-channels used as the roofing material. We have a catenary shaped cable system below to prevent wind uplift forces. The end cables are inclined to provide the lateral stability for the structure.

Project Details
The C-channels are bolted to the hangers.The pattern of the roof was limited to 6m due to the maximum length of the bend press to form the channels. Finalising the pattern was an iterative and complex process, to mitigate the limited coil availability and to limit the offcuts on the project.
The existing concrete edge beam was under reinforced. The remedial design and construction was a challenge and resulted in delays. Teamwork and collaboration solved the issues. We created a temporary laydown area at the top of the site. To accommodate the operational school we seperated the work from the school with shade cloth barricades. The school's exam timetable posed a challenge and no-work was allowed during matric exam papers. We adjusted the work hours on site to suit.
