Project Overview

The brief was to create a unique, aesthetically pleasing structure while still remaining cost effective. The structure needed to blend into the environment and align with the aesthetics created in the adjacent estate. The bridge comprises of three simply supported spans. Each span is approximately 19.5m in length. The bridge is a semi through arch truss bridge fabricated with square hollow sections fully welded off site and erected into place.

Project Details
All three spans were fabricated off site and all connections were fully welded to allow for a smooth and aesthetically pleasing structure. Complex aspects of the fabrication were the bending of the top chord to a radius of approximately 48m. All designs were conducted in discussion with the steel fabricator in order to ensure a fit for purpose solution.
During construction, heavy rain occurred which caused the river to swell and damage some of the temporary staging in place for the substructure. Careful planning of construction activities were done moving forward to ensure that this didn't happen again.
Benefits of Steel in this Application

By designing the superstructure of the deck to be as light as possible, the entire deck could be fabricated off site and lifted and bolted into place in one day. This allowed for a quick construction period and minimal disruption to the community.
