Project Team Interview Case Study
Project Overview

Epiroc, a Swedish mining equipment company, needed a new industrial facility in Kathu, South Africa. The project includes an office and admin building, a workshop for servicing equipment, and a battery charging area. The structural framing utilises steel to create a large, open-plan workshop with specialized crane systems.

Project Details
The steel contractor modeled the building in Tekla to generate detailed fabrication drawings and parts lists. This allowed for precise pre-fabrication of the steel components, including the unique lattice columns required to accommodate the crane systems. The off-site fabrication, combined with the ease of on-site assembly, enabled the rapid comple
The erection and installation process required careful coordination between the steel contractor and the main contractor to ensure smooth integration with the wet works. Challenges included transporting the large lattice columns and aligning the crane rails to strict tolerances, which were overcome through on-site adjustments and adaptation
Key challenges included achieving the precise crane rail alignments and accommodating level variations in the floor layout. Solutions involved additional brackets to allow for on-site adjustments, as well as extensive pre-planning and coordination between the project team to minimise issues during construction.
Benefits of Steel in this Application

The extensive use of structural steel was a key factor in the success of the Kathu Epiroc project. Steel's inherent strength, flexibility, and adaptability allowed the design team to create a building tailored to Epiroc's specific operational requirements.

The long spans, precise connections, and ability to incorporate specialized crane systems were all enabled by the steel construction. Additionally, the speed of fabrication and erection, as well as the potential for future disassembly and relocation, made steel an ideal choice. The end result is an impressive, visually striking building that showcases the versatility and benefits of steel in industrial applications.

Testimonials

In their video case study interview, the project team expressed a strong sense of pride in the outcome of the Epiroc facility. Comments highlighted the building's impressive aesthetic appeal, which uplifted the surrounding area, as well as the positive relationships and repeat business with the client, indicating a well-executed project. The team emphasised the importance of people and teamwork in delivering high-quality results.
