Project Overview

The project was initiated by Sharoona who had undertaken a number of spiritual pilgrimages to India. A seed was sown and she decided to create a similar Spiritual Centre in Durban North. Brian Johnson Architect and Associates were commissioned and prepared a very innovative design that was approved by the Client. GIARC design prepared the Council submission and approval drawings. Barland Studio was then appointed by the client to prepare detail construction drawings to meet a budget and the current form of the building envelope was developed through an active collaboration with the Structural Engineers and roofing consultants. The Interior design was undertaken and completed by Falconer Interior Design. The structural frame is a truncated cone with a top compression ring springing off the ring beam and reinforced concrete roof slab to the centre. A large section of clearstory glazing in the southern face is utilised to spotlight the stage in the auditorium. The cone is not symmetrical so imbalanced load distribution about the compression ring needed to be accounted for.

Project Details
The central compression ring comprises a circular fabricated box section of which large smoke extraction fans are housed. To complete the aesthetics and to provide weather proofing to the fans, a capping capsule with louvre cladding, prefabricated and mounted over the compression ring. Erection of the structure required the central compression ring to be accurately lifted and located on formwork to receive the branch supports. The Client/Architect insisted that the cone was to reflect a smooth curvature with no segmentation. Radiused tubular purlins were utilised to support the GRS Zip-Tec 420 tapered profile 0.8 mm sheets, with the taper being methodically calculated to perfectly match the curvature of the cone.
Combining the accuracy of the rolling of the cladding sheets and the structure was the main challenge. Workshop meetings with specilaist suppliers and designers ensured that all componets invloved in the strucure were compatable. The surrounding concrete structures on three sides with the fourth side being on an up built boundary, made cranage of the steel elements particularly challenging.
