Performance from the outside in – Why getting roofing right matters

A roof or façade may help define how a building looks, but its real job is considerably more demanding: protecting the building, supporting its energy performance and continuing to perform reliably over decades.

As sponsor of the Metal Cladding and Roofing Category at the SAISC Steel Awards 2026, Clotan Steel believes this is why roofing and cladding need to be considered as performance systems rather than simply aesthetic elements.

The starting point is specification. Project teams need to consider the building’s application, environmental exposure and loading conditions, together with insulation requirements and the complete roof build-up. Rooftop services and maintenance access should also be planned early, while penetrations, junctions and upstands require particular attention because seemingly small details can ultimately become points of failure.

Performance begins with the right specification

Profile, material and coating each play a different but interconnected role in determining long-term performance.

Profile selection influences structural performance, water shedding and the ability of the system to accommodate thermal movement. Material selection affects strength-to-weight performance, corrosion behaviour and compatibility with fixings and adjacent materials. Coatings, meanwhile, provide a critical defence against factors including UV exposure, pollution and coastal salinity and therefore need to be appropriate to the environment in which the building will operate.

But specification alone does not guarantee the outcome.

Clotan Steel highlights the importance of ensuring that the system specified is also the system ultimately supplied to the project. Clear performance criteria, material certification and inspection during delivery and installation can help guard against informal substitution or value engineering that inadvertently reduces the performance of the building envelope.

This is also why Clotan’s approach extends beyond supplying a product. Its technical team works to understand the building type, environmental exposure, structural requirements and expected performance before recommending an appropriate solution.

This includes guiding customers through decisions around profile, material and coating selection, as well as detailing at junctions and penetrations, with an emphasis on durability and whole-life value rather than short-term cost.

Technical support before material reaches site

Some of the most important decisions affecting roofing and cladding performance happen before manufacturing or installation begins.

Working from the latest drawing revisions is essential, as outdated information can result in incorrect quantities, profiles or details. Accurate quantity take-offs similarly depend on understanding the actual roof and façade geometry, laps and junctions rather than relying on broad estimates.

Clotan Steel sees technical support as an ongoing conversation involving the supplier, customer and professional team. Where a better-performing or more cost-effective solution can be identified, this should ideally happen before an order is confirmed — while continued engagement is important as drawings and site conditions evolve during the project.

Manufacturing quality and dimensional consistency are equally fundamental. Inconsistent tolerances can lead to poor laps, misalignment and compromised weathertightness, while precision in manufacturing helps reduce on-site adjustment and enables the original design intent to translate into reliable long-term performance.

Looking beyond the lowest price

Even a well-designed roofing or cladding system can be compromised through incorrect specification, unchecked product substitution, poor workmanship or deviation from manufacturer requirements.

For Clotan Steel, avoiding these problems requires discipline throughout the process: early technical input, specification against actual project conditions, verification of materials supplied, appropriate installer training and staged inspections.

It also requires a shift away from a race to the lowest upfront price towards consideration of whole-life value.

A lower initial cost can quickly lose its advantage if it results in premature maintenance, replacement or failure. Long-term performance therefore needs to remain part of the value equation from specification through to installation.

New possibilities for the building envelope

At the same time, innovation is expanding what designers can achieve with steel roofing and cladding.

Concealed-fix systems are enabling cleaner architectural lines while maintaining performance, advances in profile engineering are increasing spanning capabilities and improving water management, and coating technologies continue to improve corrosion resistance and colour retention in demanding environments.

Sustainability and energy performance are also becoming increasingly influential in specification decisions.

Greater attention to whole-life environmental impact and embodied carbon supports the case for durable systems that reduce waste and replacement cycles. Insulation performance is increasingly considered as part of the complete roof build-up, while growing adoption of building-integrated and roof-mounted solar requires roofing decisions to be coordinated more closely with structural, electrical and waterproofing considerations from the design stage.

For Clotan Steel, these developments point towards an industry in which architectural freedom and technical performance increasingly work together rather than compete.

Recognising excellence in steel

That balance is also central to what Clotan Steel will be celebrating through its sponsorship of the Metal Cladding and Roofing Category at the SAISC Steel Awards 2026.

The company believes award-worthy projects bring together innovation, functionality and aesthetics. They demonstrate architectural ambition while retaining the durability, weathertightness and long-term reliability on which the building ultimately depends.

The best applications show that visual ambition and technical excellence do not have to be a trade-off — they can strengthen one another.

As SAISC celebrates 70 years in 2026, Clotan Steel sees further opportunity for steel roofing, cladding and building-envelope solutions across Southern Africa. Advances in coatings, profiles and integrated technologies such as solar are opening new possibilities, while a stronger focus on whole-life performance is raising expectations of what well-specified building envelopes should deliver.

For Clotan Steel, that creates an opportunity not simply to build differently, but to build for longevity — supporting an industry capable of delivering innovative, sustainable steel solutions with confidence in their performance for decades to come.
