Project Overview

It is a mining structure so the brief was purely functional. The structure as a whole is a steel winder house erected on top of a concrete headgear. The steel structure is made up of a portal frame supported from laced columns. There is a large crane girder supported on top of the laced column section. The bracing of the structure around the cantil

Project Details
The erection process was more complex as a large portion of the structure had to be pre-assembled and supported by temporary steel work on top of the concrete structure. 4 Large pins were designed with adjustable supports to carry out final alignment before the knee braces were welded into the cast in plates. Large cantilevers and load reversals ma
The cast in plates had a maximum of 600kN tension load allowed. The design had to ensure these loads were not exceeded as the cast in plates were completed before the design. As the loads were initially too high the addition of full braced bays to turn 3 faces into braced trusses resulted in acceptable loads. As the cantilever portion of the structure needed to be welded on site onto the cast in plates. The concern was alignment between all 4 points. It was then decided to create temporary steel frames to hang the cantilever portion from pins with adjustable supports to align all the points.
Benefits of Steel in this Application

Steel was used due to cost savings from a concrete design.

Testimonials

Worthy of recognition especially due to replacing an expensive and probably time consuming concrete structure, innovative changing of load path to cater for restrictive strength of cast in plates and innovative erection of cantilever.
