The event saw a significant turnout of women from across various facets of the steel industry, gathering to celebrate their unique and essential roles that drive the sector forward. From structural engineers shaping skylines to office- and operational managers steering several teams, the breadth of expertise represented highlighted the multifaceted nature of women’s involvement. This assembly provided a unique opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate their individual and collective impact on the steel industry.
A key highlight of the day was an insightful and motivational presentation by a registered dietitian. Recognising the demanding nature of careers within the steel industry, the speaker shared practical, valuable insights on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, offering easier ways to approach nutrition without sacrificing enjoyment. This holistic approach to professional well-being was well-received, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices in womens personal lives, which ultimately contributes to a more resilient and productive workforce.
More profoundly, the event created a much-needed “safe space” for women professionals to connect, relax, and engage in meaningful networking. Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to meet and interact with peers whom they might never have encountered otherwise in their day-to-day professional lives. This facilitated new relationships, the exchange of ideas, and the sharing of experiences, fostering a community of support. Such interactions are vital for nurturing a collective desire among the SAISC members to see the industry grow and thrive
An attendee, Giovanna Grobler, a Head of Sales at Mentis Africa shared her perspective: “It is so important for us as women to get together and celebrate the work we do and the impact we have, in an industry that consists of 80% men.”
The success of this gathering serves as a testament to the growing recognition of women’s critical role in the steel industry and SAISC’s proactive efforts to foster a more inclusive and dynamic professional environment. As the Southern African steel industry continues to evolve, the SAISC remains dedicated to supporting its entire ecosystem, ensuring that all professionals, have the resources, connections, and recognition needed to thrive and contribute to the industry’s ongoing development.
